January 2015 General Meeting
Our speaker at the January 28th meeting, Ruthie Frierson, was greeted by a very receptive audience as she detailed her founding of Citizens for 1 Greater New Orleans. She and other members of that organization have had success advocating a number of notable accomplishments (consolidation of a patchwork system of levee boards into two super-boards, combining seven Orleans Parish property assessors into one single office, etc.). They continue to work toward progress in criminal justice, education, and ethics/good government reform. Accompanying her was their education chairman, Margo Phelps. (It was exciting to realize that I taught Margo chemistry at McGehee’s some years ago!)

Besides an outstanding meeting January was also an unexpected and wonderful reunion—-
Pictured are: President, Harriet Aguiar Netto, Margo Phelps (our March Speaker and a former Student of Harriet’s at McGehee School), Ruthie Frierson, our January Speaker and Denise Reinecke, WBL Member and Ruthie Frierson’s teacher at McGehee.

Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair 2014
WBL had 14 happy volunteers, 4 friends and 3 Telephone Volunteers working many hours over a three day period. Many worked multiple shifts. Next year February 23 –26, 2015 we hope to have even more students participating. We will need more volunteers. On Tuesday morning we dressed the project tables with white table skirts for the Senior Division and black table skirts for the Junior Division. That’s approximately 45 tables. This was a first for GNOSEF and a last minute addition thanks to a generous donor. We could have used a few more hands. Other volunteers had to delay their work to help us. Usually on Tuesday morning we only help place project numbers on the tables designating where each project will be set up.
Starting at Noon the students bring their projects to set up. WBL’ers are the first to greet the students, answer any questions and direct them to their proper location. We helped 300 students with 250 projects.
Some WBL’ers also work as safety inspectors in the afternoon. After the student is set up they go over a check list with the student to make sure there is nothing on their project that will disqualify them from competition. We also work on Wednesday 8 a.m.-5 pm preparing for Judges and during Judging—helping students where needed and keeping crowd control. On Thursday we have public viewing in the Morning and Project Pick-up in the afternoon. 8:30 a.m-6 p.m. Again we offer assistance where needed and crowd control. Award Ceremony is Thursday night.
Day at the Louisiana Legislature – House of Representatives
On April 23rd a contingent of WBL members attended a number of morning committee meetings. We went to the House and Government Affairs, Insurance, and Education Committee meetings. Several New Orleans schools, a Boy Scout troop and many other organizations were seeing our state government in action also.In the afternoon, Representative Julie Stokes(a friend of Diana Bulot) announced to the full house that members of Women for a Better Louisiana were present and what our organization has accomplished. We received a round of applause! It was a great experience and we had a wonderful educational and entertaining day. Harriet Aguiar-Netto
Jefferson Beautification’s Arbor Day Program
January was a fast working meeting and we made preparations for our vols for the GNOSEF (Science Fair). Then President Harriet and Treasurer Myrtle Dubea were off to Oswald-Dubea Arboretum in LaSalle Park on Airline Drive for Jefferson Beautification’s Arbor Day Program. 15 dedicated trees were planted and 2 benches were installed. One of the dedicated trees was donated by WBL in memory of Rene Netto, our President Harriet Aguiar-Netto’s husband.
